KIRIKO NANANAN

Kiriko NANANAN, this strange name hide one of the most original faces of the comic strip of the women in Japan. Since its beginnings with Hole , in the Garo review in 1993, Kiriko Nananan approaches interior the feelings and female sexuality. Its glance on Japanese youth is of a tenderness not deprived of cruelty, as freezing it Heartless Bitch or Blue attests it , melancholic person page of love between two high-school girls. The "interiority "of its accounts agrees with a smooth and contrasted drawing, and with a singular cutting, alternation of large plans of faces, silhouettes or objects off-gauge. The expression "a superficial sensitivity" acquires with it any sound sense.‎

What I like about the illustration is that her usage of lines, which are unconventionally both but yet effectively conveys the mood/expression of her characters. The thick line work are often uneven if not squiggly often depicts the loneliness of the modern/career woman. Not surprisingly some of her characters are female illustrators, whom often "battles" everyday life and heartbreak. Highly recommended for female readers.
